About Samantha

I am a PhD student at the University of Miami studying air sea physics. My PhD research involves studying air sea interactions (wind and waves) in coastal Monterey Bay, CA with satellite/remote sensing/radar data and models. I utilize scientific programming, data science, algorithm development, image processing, signal processing and modeling to perform my scientific analysis. I have received my bachelor’s of science in atmospheric science from Penn State and have held internships at NASA, NOAA, etc.

How did you get into tech?

I first starting learning programming 8 years ago during my undergrad in atmospheric sciences with FORTRAN. The atmospheric, ocean science and physics heavily rely on advancements with programming and tech through forecast modeling (ocean, atm, climate), machine learning and AI, data visualization, and data analysis.

What languages/technologies do you have the most experience in?

Python, matlab, IDL, FORTRAN

What are you currently learning/practising?

Machine learning/AI

What are your favourite resources to learn/stay updated on tech?

Code academy, udemy, social media!

What would people learn about by following you?

Life as a PhD student, daily weather forecasts, python, matlab, satellite/radar/remote sensing applications in earth science, NASA work/internships, data science, image and signal processing and data visualization techniques, complex topics on atmospheric and oceanic physics (wind, waves, turbulence, fluid dynamics etc) broken down, daily inspiration, life as a scientist

What inspired you to start sharing your experiences on social media?

To study for PhD qualifying exam, improve my communication skills, break down complex topics, share my research with the public and the community!
