About Erin

I spent 20 years in television news as a host, reporter and producer before shaking things up by moving into blogging, freelancing and embracing YouTube. I speak fluent Spanish, love to travel, and have a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America because of my love for jewelry making and silversmithing. In my spare time, I convert camper vans with my husband.

How did you get into tech?

I’ve always been fascinated with gadgets, devices and sciences but I absolutely sucked at science and tech in school. I loved reading and learning about the natural world, biology, machines, and archaeology, but I realized it’s not in my nature to understand them as deeply as some others can. With my journalistic background, training and experience, I’m able to let others be the experts while sharing their knowledge, stories and work products in a way everyone can understand.

What languages/technologies do you have the most experience in?

I let others be the experts in these fields.

What are you currently learning/practising?

Architecture, patience.

What are your favourite resources to learn/stay updated on tech?

I miss StumbleUpon for sharing random interesting facts and articles with me. I love National Geographic for its deep dives into topics and follow Jessica Naziri’s fabulous Instagram feed and on Twitter, Lance Ulanoff is one of the people I’d most like to grab a bourbon with. If I could sit with Lance, Jessica and Bobak Ferdowsi from NASA at a dinner party I’d be happy.

What would people learn about by following you?

They’d learn a lot about consumer gadgets; whether they’re worth the money, whether they do what they promise and whether they’ll really make your life better.

What inspired you to start sharing your experiences on social media?

As a former professional journalist, being on social media was part of the job and something I learned just like any other media skill. What I love about it is that unlike producing video stories for regular TV channels, you get instant interaction and feedback. No wondering if what you’re doing is valuable. You can instantly crowdsource a topic and gauge if people really care about it. So in short: human connections and instant gratification.

How can we get in touch with you?

Reach me through social media or YouTube any time.

Lightning round

iPhone or Android?

iPhone

Dogs or cats?

I started life as a cat person but after they died I adopted a petrified Mexican rescue dog. She has my heart right now.

What’s your favourite ice cream flavour?

Dark chocolate.

What’s the next place you want to travel to?

San Sebastián Spain

How many hours of sleep do you need to get to feel like yourself?

7

What is your superpower?

I can take complicated information and distil it into something any layperson can understand. And I had a third (yep, three) kidney that I think means I am immune to hangovers.

That is such a useful superpower, which definitely makes sense given how deep you tend to go into topics! And a third kidney? Woah, that’s a fun fact I’ve never heard!
