About Eden

Eden Adler is a Software Engineer living in Tel Aviv who holds a B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan. With a vision to impact the medical field through technology, she decided to pivot her professional career towards tech. She enrolled in a coding bootcamp, and five months later was hired as a software developer and early employee at the insurtech company, Lemonade. Outside of work, Eden is one of the team members behind Women of Startup Nation, a community of over 18,000 people that aims to share the stories and showcase role models of women in technology in Israel. She also started the Instagram account, What the Tech to help make tech more approachable and relatable to non-techies.

How did you get into tech?

I didn’t study CS, I was very seriously pre-med. It wasn’t until I started the process of applying to medical schools that I had to reflect on why I want to be a doctor. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this wasn’t what I truly wanted. Programming was always something I was curious about, but because of my rigorous pre-med course load, I never managed to find the time to take a course. I decided to follow my curiosity and that’s what ultimately led to me enrolling in a coding bootcamp and starting my career as a developer.

What would people learn about by following you?

I hope people learn about what it’s like to have a career as a software engineer and see that programming is a lot more creative, collaborative, and powerful than they thought it was. I also want to break down the heavy tech jargon and make it less intimidating to non-techies. I also live in one of the top tech cities in the world, Tel Aviv, so I want to show people what life and the tech scene are like here.

What inspired you to start sharing your experiences on social media?

From my own experience, I know that part of the reason I didn’t pursue a career in software engineering is that I didn’t have any female role models to look up to. And I see how much my younger cousins are influenced by what they see on Instagram. So it made me think that maybe if I put myself out there as a female software engineer who they could relate to, that it might inspire them to consider pursuing a career in software development or another STEM-related field.

What is your superpower?

I’m uber-sensitive. I used to think it was a weakness, but now I see how it helps me relate to people on a deeper level and it’s actually a superpower.

Yes! That really is a superpower, I think that’s the definition of empathy – which is obviously so useful to have in technology!
